A few years ago when I met my first Team Finn member, I thought this guy has something going on — something larger than riding a bike. As I met more Finn members I kept thinking — “more than a bike”. As our relationship grew and I learned the path that Finn had taken, the impact he had, I was more and more taken aback. When Patrick invited me out to the B.C. Cancer Agency for a presentation about where Team Finn fundraising was going, I listenened to Dr. Sorensen and I got it.
The question that burns me is why? Why after billions of dollars have been poured into cancer research are we still seeing such pain and suffering? Why did my mother and father have to die in such misery? Why can’t we figure this out? What is wrong with us?
My visit to the B.C. Cancer Agency offered my first glimmer of hope, the portion of an answer. Dr. Sorensen and his team seemed to be on to something that could very well break the code that causes cancers to spread. By focussing on children, the group that the drug companies seem not to, he and has team have glimpsed into why cancer spreads. He sees these growths without the complexity of years of hard living — his view of the problem is clear and my intuition says the answer is here. For this reason I will throw all of my energy at this area of research — pediatric cancer research.
Finn, I did not have the pleasure of seeing you Run Jump Bounce Dance Sing Love Smile and Ride, but I want to thank you for offering up such inspiration that I pray one day will make a difference and change the outcome for millions of people.
